Cowlin Secure £77m Student Accommodation Contract

Cowlin Construction Limited recently announced that it has been awarded the £77million contract to build 1948 new student accommodation units at University of Exeter.

The partnership between Cowlin Construction and University Partnerships Programme Limited (UPP), and their appointment as Development partners with the University of Exeter, was first announced in October 2008 with this new contract forming part of the University’s £400 million capital programme.

Located at University of Exeter’s Streatham Campus, enabling works are already underway with completion anticipated late 2012.

Bob Clark, Cowlin Group Managing Director, commented: “We are delighted to have been awarded this prestigious contract which allows us to build on the excellent relationships we have with UPP and the University of Exeter.  This three year project will create training and employment opportunities within Cowlin and our well established local supply chain”.

This is the second project that Cowlin has been awarded with UPP, the first being the £31 million development of student accommodation and academic buildings for the University of Plymouth, part of a 5-year framework, which completed in 2008.

Cowlin Construction’s portfolio of student accommodation projects also includes the Tai Cartrefi campus at Swansea University, the recently completed £30million project at Bangor University and current projects in Exeter and Winchester which total £21 million.

University of Exeter is one of a series of projects which UPP have with Universities across the country to improve and increase accommodation stock and release capital for academic use.  Since its inception in 1998 UPP have invested over £1 billion in higher education student accommodation programmes with a further £1 billion planned in the next 4 years.

As part of this first, 3-year, phase the University will also be developing academic buildings and providing further student accommodation as they continue to cement their recent achievement of becoming one of the top 10 Universities in the UK.
